Omar’s Covenant to the Christians of Najran
This is
what Omar the Commander of the Faithful wrote to the people of Najran; any
one leaves is secure by Allah’s security; no Moslem will harm him as
fulfillment to what the Messenger of Allah
(SAW)
and abu- Bakr wrote to them. If they come across the Emirs of Al-Sham or
Iraq, they should be given pieces of land to live. If they possess a piece
of land it will be considered as a grant and ownership in compensation of
their land; no one should take it. If any Moslem meets them, he should
support them against their oppressors because they have the oath. They do
not have to pay the poll tax for twenty four months after they settle;
they should not be taxed except from what they earn without being
oppressed or humiliated.
